The Steadfast Tin Soldier

(I was so surprised yesterday when I saw this lovely book over at Silver Shoes & Rabbit Holes- I already had this post ready to publish today... you must go read Danzel's review, it's fantastic!  You'll see more pictures from this beautiful book there as well.)
You either love Hans Christian Andersen's stories or you hate them.  My mom hated them.  So, as a kid they weren't read to me.  BUT, when I started reading on my own I did read several- including this one.  And it was sad.

Now we come to present day, Cynthia Rylant's retelling of The Steadfast Tin Soldier (published and released by Abrams Books for Young readers March 2013) is remarkable.  The illustrations by Jen Corace alone are enough to knock your socks off.  This book is beautiful and the story is absolutely lovely... and the ending isn't horribly dire.

The fish illustrations are so exquisite!  Really, it all is.  This is the love story of the steadfast tin soldier and the little dancer... and what the soldier must endure before he can be united with his love... in the end they are together (a bit of a twist on the original).

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful.
