Charley's First Night

Charley's First Night by Amy Hest, illustrated by Helen Oxenbury, the story of a boy and his dog on their very first night together.
"My mother (Mrs. Korn) and my father (Mr. Korn) were pretty clear about who would be in charge of walking Charley.  (I would be in charge of walking Charley, they said, and I couldn't wait to walk Charley every day forever.)  They were pretty clear about who would be in charge  of feeding Charley.  (I would be in charge of feeding Charley, they said, and I couldn't wait to feed Charley every day forever.)  They were also pretty clear about where Charley would be sleeping.  (Charley would be sleeping in the kitchen, they said, and I thought about Charley in the kitchen alone every night forever.)"

This is the sweetest of stories.  You can see how events unfold as the night wears on.  I adore Oxenbury's illustrations.  They capture the innocence and desires of this little boy so perfectly.  I just looked up the author, Amy Hest, she's written quite a few books- all new to me.  I'll be on the lookout for them.

I've been a big fan of Helen Oxenbury's work for a very long time,  this month we'll be showcasing several of her books.  In fact we've already shown We're Going on a Bear Hunt and The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig.

I must be off celebrating Human Rights Day now!  (Meaning I'll be cleaning the house, doing laundry, and picking up after my kids who are all home today.)

Enjoy & Happy Reading
