Monarch Caterpillars!

Here's a BIG HEADS UP folks!  The Monarch Caterpillars are here!!!  In Northern Utah at least.  I really don't know how to convey my enthusiasm and excitement here people...  THIS IS FANTASTIC!  AND WONDERFUL!  AND EXCITING!!!  The thing is, Monarchs were all over the place this time of year when I was a kid.  If you saw a milk weed plant in August you'd likely find one of these cute striped fellows.  But as the years have past the Monarchs have been on the decline in a big way.  There  have been many years where we didn't even find a single one.  SO this past week when I found 12+ in my Mamas yard I could barely contain myself!  See for yourself...

Isn't that an absolutely beautiful sight to see?  Am I a crazy person to get high off of caterpillar sightings?  Crazy or not, I'm happy as a lark about it!  (An aunt of Trapper's heard about my enthusiasm on this subject and remarked "once a teacher, always a teacher" she's right about that.  If I was still teaching Kindergarten right now, you KNOW I'd have several jars in my classroom!)  As it is, we collected two fine specimens to feed and observe from home.

Here they are with one of my new favorite Caterpillar books Ten Little Caterpillars by Bill Martin Jr illustrated by Lois Ehlert.

I'm really excited to watch the miracle of caterpillar into butterfly unfold in front of my eyes over the next two weeks.  You'd better believe you'll be seeing more on this subject in posts to come!
