Join Me, Best Beloved...

I grew up reading & listening to Favorite Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling Illustrated by H. B. Vestal.  I spent hours pouring over this book.  The illustrations are incredible, absolutely superb.  And of course Kipling's classic stories of how things came to be are enchanting and fantastic.  I have no idea what happened to the tattered copy of my childhood, but with four siblings- who knows?

I've been wanting to find of copy of this out of print book for sometime.  And it is available out there.  But you know what's better than searching online for an out of print book and ordering it for x amount of dollars?...  Happening upon a nearly perfect copy at your local thrift store for one buck!

It was like the universe aligned and smiled upon me!  It's such a HUGE thrill for me to happen upon a book I've been wanting for years.  Seriously this find made my day- no no, my week.  Who knows maybe it even made my month, I'll have to let you know.
The book includes seven of Kipling's Just So Stories.
Here you see an illustration from "The Beginning of the Armadillos".  I love the expression on the young jaguar!
Check out the beautiful buttons that line the back of Rhinoceros in "How the Rhinoceros got his Wrinkly Skin".
I've always enjoyed the story of the Elephant's Child, who was full of 'satiable curiosity, in How the Elephant got his Trunk.
And of course the Leopard in "How the Leopard got his Spots".  I love love love this picture!

It couldn't have been better timing for me to find this book.  My boys are just starting to enjoy longer bedtime stories- and these stories are fairly long.  Yesterday we read the first one together.  There's something very special about cuddling up with your own children, with a book your Mama & Papa used to cuddle up and read to you... once upon a time.
