Buckle Up for Giggles...

Some time around age 3 one of my kids became obsessed with safety. She kept us on our toes telling us about all our safety violations. She even dressed as a member of the safety patrol for Halloween! Safety was her number one priority, and when that is the case there is only one book to read....

Officer Buckle and Gloria, by Peggy Rathmann

While this book is full of safety, it's got a great underlying message of teamwork, and relying on one another. I love it. Also, let me say a little about the illustrations, they are quite clever-- clever enough, in fact, to win the book a Caldecott medal. I especially like the fluidity of them. There is a lot of haphazardly, unsafe action spilling it's way through the drawings in this book.
And while I'm on the topic, just and FYI here: we're a trying to highlight many of the Caldecott winners on the blog. The more we get to, the more you'll see that they are all very different. The award is for 'distinguished" illustrations and books that really get the point across using the pictures. This one definitely does. You can see the story unfold without reading the text which is great for little listeners!

Happy and safe reading!

  1. As a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), I wholeheartedly endorse this book.

  2. Sounds fun! I really should check out more of the caldecott books, I can't wait to take a look!

  3. I love your explaination about what caldecotts are here. I think you should make a similar explaination/ heading on the caldecott page.

Oh how we love comments! And, we are vigilant about replying. So, share, share, share, we love to hear what you think!
